Allah جل جلاله says, “Those you invoke instead of Allah cannot help you, nor can they even help themselves.” Surah Al Araf 7:197.

This is among the clearest foundations of Tawhid, yet it is a basic truth that many attempt to obscure through endless qualifications and excuses. The one who cannot independently benefit himself, repel harm from himself, control life or death, or answer a supplication by his own power cannot possess anything from the exclusive rights of Allah جل جلاله.

The prophets, the righteous, the martyrs and the awliya are honoured according to their proper rank, but none of them shares in the Lordship or exclusive divine rights of Allah جل جلاله. Love for the righteous is not a licence to direct acts of worship towards them. True honouring of them means following their guidance, and their guidance was to worship Allah جل جلاله alone.

This is the simplicity and purity of Tawhid. Supplication is for Allah, reliance is upon Allah, ultimate hope is in Allah, and matters that only Allah can fulfil are sought from Allah alone. No amount of inherited custom, emotional attachment, philosophical terminology or elaborate argumentation can overturn that foundation.
