Over 100,000 Wi-Fi routers across the globe were just discovered shipping straight out of the factory with a hidden backdoor that phones home to servers in China every 35 seconds.
Jacob Baines, Chief Technology Officer at cybersecurity intelligence firm VulnCheck, uncovered the implant named Endlessdoors across 20 different router models manufactured by Chinese tech firm Shenzhen Zhibotong Electronics.
The backdoor relies on a modified open-source tool called rctl, running with full root privileges while disguising itself as a standard Linux kernel process. The moment the router connects to the internet, it opens unencrypted, unauthenticated remote access directly to command servers on Alibaba Cloud infrastructure in Shanghai and Shenzhen.
What makes this situation far worse is white-labeling. Because the hardware is sold under brand names like Zbtlink and Wiflyer, and rebadged for various international third-party vendors, thousands of homes and small businesses likely have no idea these devices are sitting on their local networks.
Zbtlink claimed the code was merely intended for after-sales maintenance. But hardcoding silent, unauthenticated root shells directly into factory firmware goes way past routine customer support.
When basic network hardware arrives pre-loaded with direct access for foreign servers, how can consumers and businesses actually protect their private data?

(The tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny)。」
