Why has Pakistan suddenly become so brazen in bombing Afghanistan, seemingly without fear of international consequences?

The full answer is long. But this 2019 clip of Donald Trump explains part of it.

Trump openly threatened to wipe Afghanistan “off the face of the earth,” then said Washington was working with Pakistan to extricate itself from the war.

Pakistan has long presented itself to Washington as the regional instrument for managing Afghanistan.

My reading is that the same logic continues today: Islamabad believes that by serving wider American and Israeli regional interests, including pressure on Iran and military action against Afghanistan, it will be protected from consequences.

Pakistan is not acting with confidence because it is powerful. It is acting with impunity because it believes powerful patrons are behind it.

This adventurism will cost Pakistan dearly across the Afghanistan, Iran, and India fronts. The alliances it is relying on today may leave it isolated tomorrow.
