al Muwafaq Ibn Qudāmah رحمه الله (d. 620H) said in Lumʿah al ʿItiqād:

“Muʿāwiyah is the maternal uncle of the believers, the scribe of the revelation of Allah, and one of the Khulafā of the Muslims may Allah the most high be pleased with them.”

Ibn Abī al-ʿIzz al Ḥanafī رحمه الله (d. 792H) the explainer of al Ṭaḥāwiyyah said:

“Muʿāwiyah is the first king of the Muslims and he’s the best king of the Muslims.”

al Dhahabī رحمه الله (d. 748H) said in Siyar Aʿlām al Nubalā:

“The leader of the believers, the king of Islam.”

al Bayhaqī رحمه الله (d. 458H) narrated that Imām Aḥmad رحمه الله (d. 241H) said:

“The Khulafā are Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, Uthmān, and ʿAlī.”

And it was said to him “What about Muʿāwiyah?”

He responded: “There was no one more deserving of the Khilāfah during the time of ʿAlī than ʿAlī, and May Allah have mercy on Muʿāwiyah!”

Ibn Abī Dunyā رحمه الله (d. 281) narrates that ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz رحمه الله (d. 101H) said:

“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a dream and Abū Bakr and ʿUmar were sitting with him, so I gave Salām and sat. Whilst I am sitting ʿAlī and Muʿāwiyah arrive and they entered a house and I saw the door close behind them. ʿAlī then exited and as soon as he did he said “He judged in my favor by the lord of the Kaʿbah!” and then Muʿāwiyah exited and as soon as he did he said “He has forgiven me by the lord of the Kaʿbah!””

Ibn ʿAsākir رحمه الله (d. 571H) narrates that a man said to Abū Zurʿa al-Razī رحمه الله (d. 264H): “I hate Muʿāwiyah!”

Abū Zurʿa responded: “Why!?”

The man said: “Because he fought ʿAlī!”

Abū Zurʿa responded: “Woe unto you! The lord of Muʿāwiyah is a merciful lord, and the disputant of Muʿāwiyah is a noble disputant, so who are you to get involved between them!? May Allah be pleased with them both!”

Imām Aḥmad رحمه الله (d. 241H) was asked about what occurred between ʿAlī and Muʿāwiyah so he recited:

“That was a nation who has passed away. They shall receive the reward of what they earned and you of what you earn. And you will not be asked of what they used to do.” [2:134]

And that was the response of more than one of the Salaf.

Ibn al Mubārak رحمه الله (d. 181) was asked about Muʿāwiyah and he responded:

“What can I say about a man who when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Sami Allāhu liman ḥamidah.”

“Allah listens and responds to the one who praises
Him.”

He responded behind him with:

“Rabbanā wa lakal-ḥamd”

“Our Lord! And all praise is for You.”

Then it was said to Ibn al Mubārak “Which of them is better Muʿāwiyah or ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz?”

He responded: "The dust on the nose of Muʿāwiyah whilst he was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is better than ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.”

al Muʿāf bin ʿImrān was asked: “Which of the two is better Muʿāwiyah or ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz?” So he became angry and said to the questioner:

“Are you making a man from the Saḥābah equal to a man from the Tābʿīn!? Muʿāwiyah is his companion, brother-in-law, the trusted scribe of the revelation.”

It was narrated that Ibrāhīm Muyyassar رحمه الله said:

“I never seen ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz hit anyone except a man who slandered Muʿāwiyah and so he flogged him.”

Abū Tawbah رحمه الله said:

“Muʿāwiyah is the screen of the companions of Muḥammad ﷺ so if a man attempts to exposed this screen then he dares to reach that which is behind.”

Shaykh Fareed Abdullah was the main catalyst through which Allah guided me to Salafiyyah.

This occurred when I traveled to see Shaykh Fareed Abdullah at Masjid Mumin in Los Angeles around 2012. I at the time was afflicted with the doubts of Hizbiyyah and went there seeking clarification regarding matters related to Dawah.

When I entered the Masjid a little before Maghrib I saw an older brother changing the Iqama times on the wall and approached him. I told him I traveled from San Diego to see Shaykh Fareed and asked him if he’s here. This brother looked at me incredulously and said “You came all the way up here to see Fareed!?”

I was puzzled by the brothers reaction. I told him I wanted to seek clarification concerning some things regarding Dawah.

This brother who I assumed was the Masjid’s caretaker since I was, at the time, accustomed to Hizbi speakers who carried themselves in a haughty manner, turn to me and said “I’m Fareed.”

This is what first affected me from Shaykh Fareed his humility and his unassuming nature whilst he had with him much knowledge and wisdom. And this wasn’t a one time random occurrence, another time I visited him he was watering the yard of the Masjid.

He sat with me that night and others like it for at times hours clarifying matters to me with patience and kindness. And I was no one special to him, he would do this with anyone.

By Allah’s mercy and his grace upon me I found Salafiyyah through Shaykh Fareed’s knowledge and his manners.

May Allah have mercy upon him and grant him Firdaws!
