Let me say something that makes me genuinely uncomfortable as a Nigerian.

More than 30 of Nigeria's 36 state governors are now members of the APC. Not because the APC won 30 state elections in 2023. Because one by one, opposition governors looked at what was happening around them and made a decision. The Senate is overwhelmingly APC. The House of Representatives is overwhelmingly APC.

And now Rivers State.

Fubara spent two years fighting Wike. He was suspended from office. He was humiliated at a party primary. He watched as courts were used against him repeatedly. Ten days ago he stood up in public and said: "President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is our president and he is the one we are supporting." He endorsed the man Wike picked to replace him. He said "I've gone back to our family."

Wike's response: "He had no other choice."

In the whole of Rivers State, with its oil and its history and its millions of people, there is now no functioning political opposition. Both the APC and what remains of the PDP are controlled by the same man who holds no elected office in the state.

Is this democracy?

Cardinal Onaiyekan asked the same question at Aso Rock last week. The Catholic Bishops specifically warned against what they called "the constriction of political pluralism and the creeping fear of a single-party dominant state." They said it directly to the president's face.

Political scientists have a name for what happens when a party absorbs opposition not through winning arguments but through making resistance impossible. They studied it in Mexico where the PRI ruled for 71 years through exactly this mechanism. Governors joined. Legislators joined. Courts aligned. Opposition existed on paper. Elections were held on schedule. And for 71 years nothing changed.

Mexico eventually broke the cycle in 2000. It took 71 years.

I am not comparing anyone to history's worst actors. I am comparing a political pattern to other political patterns. And the pattern I am seeing in Nigeria today has a name and a history and an outcome that should concern every Nigerian regardless of party.

Opposition is not an inconvenience to democracy. It is the proof of it.

Trillions of leveraged positions are blowing up as the BOJ loses control. Liquidity is at stake from global markets at the exact same moment oil is about to be priced in yuan.

Trump has ONE shot left to force the Gulf back into the dollar, restock the reserves, and kill the PetroYuan before it’s too late.

Fair point on my methodology, may be. However, your assertion that we would have printed N80trn is even more flawed since we only printed N23trn in ~6 years prior to 2022. You can't create a figure and assert it as self-evidently true.

And that "it might have been worse without reform" doesn't erase the fact that Nigerians are measurably poorer than in 2023.

You are right, FAAC allocations have increased significantly, fx rates have been unified, and fuel is available. This is expected since subsidies on both fuel and fx have been removed.

These were some of the objectives of the reforms. And it is good that they worked as planned.

However, household incomes have fallen over the same period of the reforms.

Inflation was 34% by Q2 2024, 23% at some point in 2025, and is still high at ~ 16% today. (CBN Inflation data, Jan 2003 to Jun 2026). The significant drop was largely due to a rebase exercise in 2025

Again, a recent World Bank report stated that poverty has been rising- 56% in 2023, 61% in 2024, and 63% in 2025.

And Dr. I would have been much happier if things were better than they are, but I’ll try to say things the way they are.

I am not an economist, and finance is also not one of my strengths. I am also not about politics. I am just a 'bloody' layman asking laymen questions. I am not sure the accounting in the Minister's statement is transparent.

If subsidy removal generated significant fiscal savings and printing money (ways and means) has stopped, why are we still accumulating debt at this pace? If only the Hon. Minister will show Nigerians the reconciliation between subsidy savings, budget deficits, debt stock and new borrowing, then I will applaud the FGN. Fiscal transparency builds trust.

Then Mbappé arrives and is being paid a higher salary and takes a higher percentage of his image-rights despite not having achieved anything for the club yet.

Now Vinícius is asking for a pay rise that reflects his status, influence, and contributions, and Madrid are reluctant to meet those demands.

From his camp’s perspective, where’s the loyalty? Where’s the respect for everything he’s already done for the club? This is exactly why he doesn’t feel loved and feels undervalued.
