What Happens if a Count is Incorrect: If a count is incorrect, the surgeon is immediately notified, and a search is conducted. The team must recount, search the field, the floor, and in the trash. If the item is still not found, an X-ray is often taken to locate it before the patient is closed. 

This process is a mandatory safety step involving at least two people to ensure patient safety and reduce the risk of further, unnecessary surgeries.
