Walaa Murad Ali Banat, 25, and her 26-year-old husband are raising their five-year-old son, Thiam, while expecting another child after Walaa experienced five previous miscarriages. Displaced more than 20 times, the family lost their home during the genocide and now rents a small storage space for $300 a month that is open on two sides and covered with tarp. Before the siege, her husband supported the family through his vegetable business, but he is now unemployed, and they rely on donations. Walaa requires ongoing heparin injections, folic acid, vitamins, and regular medical care to help maintain her pregnancy. Thiam has Butterfly Disease (pemphigus), along with calcium and potassium deficiencies, malnutrition, and a weakened immune system, requiring regular treatment, medical dressings, Fucidin, antiseptics, diapers, and other supplies that cost around $150 per week, as well as a fan to help him cope with the heat. The family says soup kitchen meals are not suitable for Thiam's medical condition or for Walaa during her pregnancy, and they continue to need nutritious food, hygiene supplies, and support to meet their medical and daily living expenses.
