Can pay transparency close gender wage gaps in developing countries?
Brazil became the first developing country to enact a large-scale pay transparency law in 2023. With @tadeuccastro , @iedarm , @bph_econ , we collaborated with Brazil's @MinPlanejamento to estimate the policy's effects thus far using a regression discontinuity design.
The answer: So far, no. We find precise null effects on every outcome. A thread.
What do workers at the margin of informality value at work?
We surveyed 700 residents of Brazil's largest favela complex to find out, using open-ended questions and discrete choice experiments. Joint work with Beatriz Marcoje, @iedarm, and @rodmclara.
