I love this quote, he wrote it in a letter to a friend.
How does it make sense and what was his reasoning?
Dostoevsky lived during the enlightenment period when people began to value facts and material information over religion and spiritual practices which was the beginning of the modern era. Dostoevsky believed that this would lead to nihilism and despair, which other thinkers believed like Nietzsche and Jung. It’s also obvious in today’s society, viewable with a sub-5 minuet conversation about people’s beliefs if you need proof.
His orthodox Christian faith was his set of values. Religion does one among many things that atheism does not; it explains existence and meaning when atheism cannot. Faith provides a higher truth, a truth truer than what empirical evidence can provide.
So he would rather shun the world’s truth than abandon his faith which had given him so much. The values, the meaning, the wisdom.
Despair was much different than suffering in Dostoevsky’s eyes, suffering was the path to meaning. He’d been sentenced to death by firing squad before the decision being pulled at the last minute, but it had been a mock execution the entire time. Then he was banished to Siberia while having epilepsy.
Through this suffering he found meaning, and if he had been nihilistic -without meaning in his suffering- then the suffering would have been for naught in his eyes, and broken him. He suffered as Jesus did on the cross, who was then reborn. This is a story in all of our lives, in fact, if you lack suffering then I pity you.
IS INFLATION REAL or FAKE? I say fake for these reasons. 1. Pay national debt with cheaper dollars. 2. Wipe out middle class. 3. Incite greater hate between rich and poor.4.Install Marxist agenda. All the government has to do is increase drilling for oil & Stop Stupid Spending.
