KEY LESSONS BETWEEN THE “PLAYLESS” IHEANACHO AND THE “GOALESS” OSIMHEN

There are some salient lessons we could learn from the Super Eagles team.

KELECHI IHEANACHO

Yesterday, Kelechi Iheanacho was brought in for the first time in the tournament. Even though he has been one of our most celebrated playmakers in times past, he spent most time on his time in this tournament on the bench.

For someone of his status, he’d be so eager to show himself and have his time of glory, but seeing that he hasn’t been starting, as a human, he probably would be having some thoughts. However, to show you how life works, he was brought in at extra time in the game against South Africa and had the opportunity to take the deciding penalty kick.

Kelechi Iheanacho came in at extra time for the first time in this tournament and had his time of glory.

In life, that which you desire might not follow the trajectory you envisage. And even if it feels like you’re running out of time, your time of glory can happen in a split second. That’s just how life works.

VICTOR OSIMHEN

Another lesson is that of Osimhen.

Osimhen is the point man of the Nigerian team. His primary role in the team is to get us goals but in the course of this tournament, the goals have not been coming. However, Osimhen has played with passion, dedication and selflessness. Even though he would love to score more goals, he isn’t selfish. He has even given some of the greatest assists in this tournament, won us penalties, and yet refrained from taking them.

If Osimhen's KPIs are the number of goals he scores, one can term him underperforming. However, Nigerians have been able to see beyond the goals but the deep sacrifice he’s been offering. Osimhen would have loved to have his moment of glory through a magnificent goal that wins us a game, but he is willing to sacrifice that opportunity for the team to stand a better chance of winning. However in this tournament, something beautiful is happening; because Osimhen has been selfless and hasn’t embarked on a selfish pursuit of personal glory, Nigerians have glorified him even without goals!

The chants of “Osimhen” are now a regular routine among the players and amongst the fans.

The lesson here is that even though the intended results don’t show as desired, put in your best with dedication and selflessness. The universe sees our efforts, and all work has its reward. It might seem like your efforts aren’t showing, but stay at it with a clear mind and sincere commitment; someday, someone somewhere will see the value you put in and reward you handsomely.
