For all of those who were wondering, Synthetic Biology is a very broad field that can be applied to various branches in healthcare, environmental sciences, etc. By doing this, we can see progress in different fields that can change the world in a variety of ways. 🔬🧫
Now that we understand the principles of biology, we want to deepen the knowledge of our fellow IGEM enthusiasts, presenting our definition of synthetic biology. This being our branch of focus in this field, we certainly hope that our passion can be transmitted. 🔬🧫🧬
As a way of spreading knowledge, here are some of the branches we can find within the field of biology. There are various branches, each one suiting the interests of every individual deepening in the world of biology. Have you found your main interest in the world of biology? 🪴
In the vast field of biology, there are many interests to choose from. However, these are some of the most popular interests where we can see various biological principles being applied. Ranging from interests in medicine to techniques used in the agricultural scene. 🩺🧫🌿
Greetings fellow science enthusiasts! As the semester begins, we wanted to start off by giving a quick reminder on some of the basics. Here, we present to everyone our view as a team on the base of biology. By knowing this, we can get a better understanding of how life works. 🌱
Here we present to our community some possible ways to detect leptospirosis in humans. Remember, it’s important to get tested in order of presenting any symptoms. Some of these tests can get done at your local clinical lab or by the referral of your primary doctor. Stay healthy!
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, preventive measures such as vaccination, avoiding standing water and veterinary check-ups can significantly reduce the risk of infection and protect our furry friend. 🐶🔬

Leptospirosis is a blood infection that many Puerto Rico natives have never heard about. Thus, the lack of familiarity with this disease can have a very negative impact on the population if we don’t raise awareness. With this said, it is crucial to educate ourselves on the topic.

The cycle of leptospirosis begins when animals, often rodents, carry the bacteria in their kidneys and shed it in their urine. This bacteria can enter the body through mucous membranes or broken skin, and spread thought the bloodstream to various organs.
Take a look at our participation at the WOW Camp, were we had the opportunity to bring students an interactive & fun approach to building a gene circuit! 🧬
Happy Father’s Day! We hope everyone is having a fantastic day and is creating unique memories with their loved ones. Remember to share love with those who have impacted our lives in such a manner. 💙
This month we celebrate some of the brightest minds in STEM who are also part of the LGBTQ+ community. Their work has changed the world, and their stories inspire future generations. Thanks for all your contributions and Happy Pride Month! 🌈

For anyone teaching or learning DNA barcoding, here's an article describing three 1.5-hour introductory lesson outlines for high school students, designed as part of a two-week summer school program in Hawai'i. The lessons are focussed around the DNA barcoding of algae but could also be adapted for other organismal groups.
The lesson outlines focus more on understanding the processes of PCR and DNA barcoding rather than hands-on lab work, so they could be reproduced without any lab equipment and using free software, or run remotely.
They also emphasise the importance of other taxonomic information as part of the identification, so they could be tied in with a broader curriculum involving morphology- or ecology-based identification.
A key part of the lessons is an inquiry activity of characterising an unknown algal specimen using DNA barcoding and morphological or ecological data, using a “claim, evidence, and reasoning” framework.
Importantly, students are encouraged to take charge of the investigations to allow as much student ownership of the research as possible.
The article also includes marking criteria for desired learning outcomes - useful for teachers and also learners!
