I spoke with @thewarzonewire about the crazy and false rumor that the Trump administration was considering using nuclear weapons in Iran. It is not. Discuss the role and effect of nuclear weapons, but don’t spread the false rumor. https://t.co/zh8pHlBh3G
NEWS 🚨: NASA's Perseverance rover has found that Martian dust is smaller and potentially more dangerous than previously thought:
• Ultrafine particles can cling to spacesuits and potentially contaminate astronauts' living quarters
• Particles this small could penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream
• Research on Earth suggests ultrafine particles may even reach the brain
This kind of thing is the natural next step of globalization and all of human society, globally, becoming more correlated through technology.
The interconnectedness first extended to states: Around the time of the early industrial revolution everyone suddenly knew where every other country was, and knew what borders everyone claimed. Soon you could ship packages anywhere on the planet, or physically travel anywhere on the planet. Then, with almost realtime satellite footage, you could see anywhere on the planet.
When I was in high school, I was really excited about the idea that if humanity could build reliable, fast, cheap space technology we would be able to expand beyond Earth and "lose track of ourselves" once again: Be back on a frontier, know far less about each other, diffusing into the wider universe like a drop of ink in a glass of water. No one government would be able to oppress everyone, and if we spread onto multiple planets and between them, there would be more cracks for people to disappear into.
When I learned about progress toward AGI, and that deep learning might "work" to get us there, none of that made sense anymore. Advanced AI was an understanding, analyzing, and tracking technology that we wouldn't be able to outrun. If something went wrong with AI, it would affect all of us, even if we'd spread off of the planet. It could track us all down in the darkness of space.
We're all in this together now. Unless we find strong countervailing forces, all of our actions affect everyone else's more than they ever have. We'll be able to track each other, trick each other, hack each other, infect each other. Technology seems to connect all things, and connecting all things seems to centralize them, and centralizing them makes them fragile.
Today, I sent a letter putting New Jersey’s port and terminal operators on notice: importing Russian diesel violates federal law and could carry serious civil and criminal consequences.
New Jersey will not stand by while Donald Trump supports Vladimir Putin at the expense of Americans. Instead of lowering costs, these imports help finance Putin’s war against Ukraine and a campaign of violence and terror that endangers our servicemembers abroad.
As a Navy veteran, I cannot let that stand unchallenged. Our ports must not be complicit.
Notable report from the WSJ team here.
In an election season with an unpopular war, it appears the U.S. military may have gone silent about disclosing strikes.
The last strikes announced came in September.
Requests for comment made tonight.
The answer I arrived at in some recent research into the 3rd century is that what's missing from this discussion is that it is specifically the Eastern Mediterranean that got into gnosticism.
This is because the eastern Mediterranean of middle and late antiquity had a lot of material prosperity and safety but also a lot of inequality, stagnant social and economic mobility, and anxiety around status, whether the music was about to stop, plus ennui from migration and urbanization caused by the pax romana.
It is the single time and place in history which most resembles our own in terms of what adaptive and maladaptive pathologies were viable. Alexandria was something like mixing a favela with LA.
It's not the terror and brutality of nature that makes people gnostic, or else it would have been the German tribes who thought it up. Gnosticism is fundamentally a disease of failing to thrive in artificial conditions that feel hostile to human nature. Flinching under the hand of a slave master is what gives you the idea of an evil demiurge, not watching lions kill antelope or whatever
NEWS 🚨: NASA's Swift telescope is now expected to fall back to Earth on Wednesday 🛰️
Most of it will burn up, but NASA puts the chance of anyone getting hurt at about 1 in 2,100

The Gulf countries are rising their voices against a new round of escalation of the 🇺🇸🇮🇱 war against 🇮🇷 . They fear consequences also for them will be even worse this time.
Trump eases sanctions on Russia and begins buying Russian diesel. Days later, Musk restricts Starlink service in Ukraine, disrupting its military operations and its ability to defend itself.
And now we’re learning directly from Putin that Russia has been in contact with Musk.
How on earth did we get to this point? How is it possible that Musk can disrupt an American ally’s military operations whenever he chooses, maintain a clear line to the Kremlin, and face zero accountability to the American people or the U.S. government?
I want to know what Musk has been discussing with Russian officials, whether those conversations had anything to do with the Starlink disruptions, and what the Trump Administration knew.
@betgerber@Juanarivers O estratégico. ¿Qué van a hacer estos semidictadoritos después del martes sin el apoyo de Trump? Andar de viaje abre posibilidades de asilo en el peor de los escenarios.
