This was an advanced scam that actually incorporated quite a few scams. For example they were also running a MITM/secretary job scam on top of it, using unknowing people who thought they were really helping buy and sell horses legitimately.

Crazy story: one time while analyzing a VoIP account for fraud I stumbled upon an entire network running something similar to ebay motors scams with the main difference being that rather than their car, they were stealing people's horses and reselling them.
