In Joseon royal funerals, Bangsangsi led the procession at the very front, wearing a distinctive mask and carrying a red spear to ward off evil spirits and misfortune on the journey to the royal tomb. In The East Palace, this figure can be seen dancing at the head of the funeral procession in the later episodes.

What makes this even more fascinating is that Bangsangsi was not unique to the Joseon period. The figure also appeared in court rituals during the Silla and Goryeo dynasties, where special incantations were recited to drive away evil spirits. The names mentioned in these chants referred to twelve guardian deities believed to protect both the living and the dead.

The drama also features other royal funeral symbols, such as Juksanma and Juganma, ceremonial horses that symbolized guiding the king’s soul to the afterlife and the heavens. These are the kinds of historical details that many viewers could easily overlook, yet the production team still chose to recreate them with remarkable care.

This is one of the many reasons why The East Palace deserves recognition. Beyond its compelling story, the drama demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to Korean history, folklore, and royal traditions, creating a world that feels far richer, more immersive, and deeply authentic.
