Somali referee Omar Artan, who was set to be the first from his country to officiate at the World Cup finals, has been denied entry to the United States.
A Somali referee who is due to officiate at the World Cup has been denied entry to the U.S. after “vetting concerns” emerged upon his arrival in Florida over the weekend.
Omar Artan arrived at Miami International Airport on a flight from Istanbul on Saturday but was barred from entering the country following a “routine” inspection, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed in a statement to The Athletic.
Artan, the 2025 Confederation of African Football men’s referee of the year, is one of 52 referees handpicked by world governing body FIFA for the tournament.

So far at the 2026 FIFA Epstein Cup before a ball kicked:
- Senegal & Uzbekistan squads treated like criminals upon arrival given full cavity searches;
- Africa’s best referee sent back to Somalia despite having a diplomatic passport;
- Iraq team photographer sent back despite valid visa;
- AIPS (international sport journalist association) calling on FIFA to sort out unacceptable visa issues of African & Iranian journalists;
- 90% of Moroccan fans with tickets denied entry
- 14 members of Iran backroom staff denied visas
Not a word from Gianni ”today I feel black/gay/disabled etc” Infantino.

The World Cup is meant to unite the world, yet ahead of 2026 World Cup we’re discussing shootings, visa restrictions, and fans being unable to attend. Qatar faced a ridiculous amount of scrutiny, but now many of the same voices are silent. The double standard is hard to ignore.
Looking north from Burnage. It’s absolutely wild how dominant the Manchester skyline looks from this angle now.
A perfect blend of traditional South Manchester suburbia giving way to the rapidly growing modern metropolis on the horizon.

Jurriën Timber misses the 2026 World Cup.
The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner. In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan.
We’re with you, Jurriën. 🧡
🇪🇸🧠 Cesc Fabregas: "Winning in Italy, believe me, people say there are a lot of 0-0s and 1-0s, it’s DIFFICULT. Trust me, I analyse a lot of football. I watch the Bundesliga, La Liga and the Premier League. Teams defend very, very differently to how they defend in Italy."
"You watch Premier League teams, you see a structure. You see what they’re trying to do. You see the style they want to apply. Here a lot of the times it’s impossible. It’s impossible to understand what’s happening. That’s why you need to pay great attention to detail." (@JamesHorncastle/@TheAthleticFC)
