Ikhide R. Ikheloa

I read. I write.

[Ikhide R. Ikheloa @ikhide]

If Ikhide Ikheloa has a philosophy for blunt criticism, it is that power must answer to the people. His social commentary focused on three notions: power, truth, and justice. When he runs amok on the Internet, it is those three filters applying themselves and probing: Who does the story serve? What worldview does it promote? Who gets hurt by it?

He says what many writers are thinking but wouldn’t voice for fear of losing career opportunities. Two years after his boycott of the Kaduna Festival, one of then governor El Rufai’s most vocal critics, a writer and activist named Dadiyata, disappeared. The next month, writers and intellectuals attended the festival again. When he lambasted them for their silence, he was voicing what many saw as a betrayal.

True this. It is also structural and systemic. In planning here in the West, distances are expressed often in blocks. Children soon learn to tell you that their school is a couple of blocks away because the school is actually built two blocks away. There is a system to their planning. The structure informs the culture. We may be berating the victims of our leaders' incompetence and lack of vision.

[Alex Onyia @winexviv]

Can we start teaching Nigerian children how to measure distance properly?

In the UK, Europe, Canada or US, someone tells you a place is 5km away, and you know exactly what that means.

In Nigeria, our units of measurement are “just here,” “near near,” “small trek,” and the legendary “you will soon reach.”

Nobody knows whether that means 200 metres or 10 kilometres!

A society that struggles to understand distance will struggle with spatial planning, mapping, infrastructure and development.

City Boy Movement coordinators arriving to Kaduna in private jets, to go and tell the poor masses that they're hungry because of opposition. 😅😅

[Abu Amir @SadiqMaunde]

“It was not our fault. We had no any other option. I was given 10k to mobilize people. We’re here not because we support Tinubu but we need the money to eat. We’re hungry. But honestly, you can’t wear a Tinubu’s shirt & enter even our area. People don’t like him.”

2012. Downtown Washington DC in front of the IMG and the World Bank with the likes of Omoyele Sowore protesting against Goodluck Jonathan for attempting to remove oil subsidy. 2012. When Southwest intellectuals, professional mourners, convinced us that removing subsidy was a criminal act and Goodluck Jonathan should pay the price for what amounts to treason. Today the same Southwest intellectuals are professional cheerleaders trying to convince us that the removal of subsidy by the same Tinubu that led us in protests is a moral imperative that must be done. Listen to "progressive" Kayode Fayemi cackling like a demented hyena that they lied to us. Nigeria is a vast crime scene. But you knew that!

Coming to 90MinutesAfrica today.

There are only two groups of people in Nigeria: those who know about the legendary Singaporean leader, Lee Kuan Yew, and how he transformed his backwater country from a third-world country to a first-world country, and those who do not. The last group is the blessed group.

The first group who know, who can analyze it and articulate the discipline and determination it took for such a transformation, are burdened. In this group is a subgroup who have spent decades dreaming, screaming, and hoping that their country will move in that direction. Decades later, after years of harassment and heckling, some in this subgroup have unofficially hung up their tools of intervention. They have retired into the world Bola Ige called sit-down-look. But because they know, it is not blissful, even in retirement. It is still a burden. Every now and then, they hear the music they used to dance to, and as their waists begin to shake, arthritis reminds them of age and failures. Some take solace in knowing they tried while in the arena.

Our guest on 90MinutesAfrica this Sunday, October 25, 2026, is one of the people who have been in the arena, who performed the dance and excelled in all the rituals associated with it, until they ask themselves, "And then what?"

Professor Okey Ndibe joins us to discuss "On retirement from commentary and the burden of unfulfilled intellectualism."

Professor Ndibe, a novelist, essayist, and long-term columnist, is the author of a brand new children's book, "Babs Fafunwa: A Life of Firsts." He just returned from another extensive trip to Nigeria and will join us at 6.30PM Nigerian Time/1.30PM New York Time to share his experiences.

This is the story of how Prof. Catherine Acholonu was able to trace the family of Olaudah Equiano all the way to Iseke in Anambra State.

It’s a story that will take you back almost 300 years ago when a young Igbo boy was snatched from his ancestral roots and sold into slavery.

But Olaudah self-educated himself, and wrote a book that remains a bestseller to this day, helping scholars to understand the true human tragedy of slavery.

Trump and the GOP have been working hard to keep this video from being reposted on social media. Repost it, keep it alive. Too many people aren't paying attention to who Donald Trump is.

He's a liar, and by his own words, he must be held accountable.🤥
