I tweet about soccer… sometimes I post data vizs about soccer… but I’ll never admit VAR saved soccer. IG account: @ikicknumbers Personal acct: @Mike_Vermeland

50 Days till the 2021 #MLS season, so here's one chart a day leading up to April 17. Naturally, I had to start with nutmegs vs. carries during the 2020 season. Enjoy. #dataviz #MLSisBack

@andrew_wiebe need you promoted to @MLS’s VAR booth. Louis Munteanu’s (no) goal could not been more clearly across the line. Thoughts?

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

People clown @MLS defending but will glorify this

@MattDoyle76 @tombogert I’d let MLS go back to espn+ if that means we can keep extra time with the whole crew.

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

@Eu_ee__ @YoungyLFC99 @RazaOlakh @dcunited Haha that is also uniquely American and draft happened today so fair play.

Also fwiw, from an American, the fans nor the teams value the draft very highly. It’s like digging for gold, most times you find nothing.

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

@Eu_ee__ @YoungyLFC99 @RazaOlakh @dcunited DP stands for designated player. American League has roster rules/salary cap which is a more strict way of enforcing basically what financial fair play is supposed to solve. All American sports have it, it promotes parity.

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

@RazaOlakh @dcunited It’s to open up a spot for them to sign a new DP (once they buy down the rest of his contract)… it’s not because they think the 23rd pick is better than Klich.

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

I suspect/hope that DCU will do some additional buying down to release him from taking up that DP spot. Otherwise, what was the point?

[Tom Bogert @tombogert]

The deal is now official: Atlanta United acquires Mateusz Klich from D.C. United.

Deal for the No. 23 SuperDraft pick + $50k GAM add-ons.

Atlanta is inheriting ~$300k of Klich's contract (hence the $300k number below). Klich still occupies one of D.C.'s DP spots.

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

Minnesota United is 5-0 all time in PK shootouts.

How un-Minnesota sports team of them.

[Taylor Twellman @TaylorTwellman]

👋🏼 ref. You watching the game in front of you or no??? 🤮🤮

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

@PROreferees @NashvilleSC @dcunited Where was Kevin Terry Jr on the Lucas Bartlett yellow?

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

Then a goal from that. If VAR is there, it should be used. @MLS

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

Can we get VAR on this? Surridge started it and met half way on the second contact and then embellished the whole thing? @MLS @thesoccerdon

[D.C. United @dcunited]

43' | Lucas Bartlett is shown a yellow card.

#NSHvDC 1-1

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

@dcufan @davejsports @iHeartSportsDC @brucemurrayHOF I wish AppleTV gave both team options and not just the local radio broadcast

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

@MLS Should be a second yellow for this foul or the one in the final play of the half. Gonna give dajome a second… might as well be consistent

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

Just racking up reckless fouls. @MLS refs can be bad but just have to be consistently bad.

[Mike Vermeland @ikicknumbers]

Why isn’t Donker getting his second yellow? Oh well. Sick goal by Pedro Santos. @MLS pro referees aren’t consistent.

The ref for the NYRB and DC united game is garbage.
