In 1988, Arsène Wenger discovered George Weah while he was playing for Tonnerre Yaoundé in Cameroon 🇨🇲 and arranged his £12,000 transfer to Monaco.
At the time, Paul Biya was the president of Cameroon.
Years later, George Weah became the president of Liberia 🇱🇷, left office, while Paul Biya is still the president of Cameroon.
I sincerely thank you all for the overwhelming gesture of love in contributing towards my court penalties. I know you did this because you relate with my principles, work, and commitments. You never asked if I had the money or not, you simply showed up in solidarity. Even when you learnt that the initial target had been reached, you just continued sending money, and you are still sending!
I didn’t have to explain much that, although I’m aggrieved too, this case is not really about me. Some of you intervened in defence of freedoms and protection of this space for accountability. Some did it in defiance against the powerful that pee on those below.
The contributions included amounts as small as 4000/-, and from across the spectrum. Both opposition and NRM people showed up. Even ministers reached out with concern. Different tribes. Different religions and nationalities. From Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nigeria, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, USA, Finland, UK, Sweden, Canada, Germany, Kazakstan, UAE, Brazil, … It has surely been a statement beyond me. Some just stood up for principles, some for religious reasons, some in memory of injustices they’ve themselves faced in the past and still.
This country has very many good people, and we could build on those to do much more good. The evil ones are few and have no REAL friends to count on. Neither are they really happy. They live in fear for the harm they’ve caused to others. Thanks to @kiizaeron and @AAgather for spearheading the campaign even before I asked, though I surely desired it to be a collective experience and statement. Thanks Hon. @HEBobiwine for passionately amplifying the call. Thanks everyone. I can’t name you all, but I saw you, and felt you. I must add that ever since this case started, I have never spent a single penny of mine. Well wishers, fans, and friends have carried me on their shoulders all through - and very happily. It is not me they carry though, it is the cause. Thank you.
A South Sudanese 🇸🇸 man, Thon Chol Riak, married Atong Aguto Monyroor after outbidding a rival in a fierce marriage contest, paying a staggering dowry of $77,000 in cash, 297 cows, and plots of land in South Sudan.
His competitor had offered $25,000 and 158 cows, but fell short as Riak sealed the union in a lavish wedding ceremony.
I worry that soon or later, there would be no one left: Earlier, it was Dr Stella Nyanzi, novelist Kakwenza Rukirabassaija, then Isaac Ssemakadde. Soon, it was Hon. Kyagulanyi Ssentamu. Ssemujju Nganda. Winne Kizza. Eron Kizza. Nicholas Opio, too?
Sadly, these are some of the best brains of our time.
Plus many ordinary folks fleeing – for both economic and political reasons.
On their part, many NRM-leaning notables are fleeing quietly or are on the set-set – visa or foreign passports on the ready. Eh.

Shakira's World Cup halftime performance was a dream come true for Uganda's 'Ghetto Kids' 🥹🇺🇬
The dance group serving disadvantaged children in Uganda caught Shakira's eye with their viral 'Dai Dai' dance videos. They later received a personal invite from Shakira to feature in the official music video and perform at the final.
There are 18 members of FIFA's disciplinary committee but the unprecedented decision to lift Balogun's automatic ban was taken by just one person - the chairman Mohammad Al Kamali of UAE. No one else was consulted.

🚨 ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MIRIA MATEMBE.
Hon. Dr. Miria Rukoza Koburunga Matembe is a trailblazing Ugandan lawyer, politician, women's rights activist, and fearless voice for democracy and good governance. Born on August 28, 1953, in Bwizibwera, Mbarara District, she grew up as the fourth of nine children in a humble family. From a young age, she defied the odds stacked against girls in her community, becoming one of the very few Munyankore women to study law in Ankole at the time.
She earned a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University and a Master of Laws from the University of Warwick in the UK. Later, she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Victoria, Canada, in recognition of her lifelong fight for justice and women's empowerment.
Her career began in the legal field as a state attorney, then as a law lecturer. She entered politics in the late 1980s, serving as a Member of the National Resistance Council, a Constituent Assembly Delegate where she helped shape Uganda's 1995 Constitution, and later as Woman MP for Mbarara District from 1996 to 2006. From 1998 to 2003, she served as Uganda's first Minister of Ethics and Integrity, where she became known for her strong anti-corruption stance.
Matembe co-founded Action for Development (ACFODE), a leading women's rights organization, and has authored several books, including memoirs on gender, politics, and constitution-making in Uganda. She was also a pioneer member of the Pan-African Parliament.
Married to Nekemia Matembe since 1975, the couple has four sons and thirteen grandchildren. Even in her seventies, she remains outspoken, recently raising her voice on governance issues.
A true pioneer who has dedicated her life to equality, integrity, and democracy in Uganda.
