I’m watching this Colombia game, & an Afro-Colombian player, Yerry Mina, subs in for another Afro-Colombian, Jhon Lucumi, & my mind is just blown.
Mina is what Portuguese called enslaved West Africans from the Gold Coast because many of them were shipped from the slave fort El Mina in Ghana. And Lucumi comes from the Yoruba phrase Olu Kumi, meaning “My friend”, which is what enslaved Yoruba called each other in the Americas. Fascinating🤯

A Portugal team stacked with world class players cannot dominate DR Congo.

It drives you even crazier when you consider that he has two midgets in midfield that has controlled football for two seasons, yet, Portugal are always on the back foot. You can argue today because Rodri and Pedri are a good match up, but I’m talking DR Congo, Colombia, or Croatia (no disrespect to them), they should be controlling the games.

Every player in this squad plays for a big club, but as a team, he cannot just make them work.

Think of Cape Verde, look at the individual players, they’re probably playing in lower clubs and maybe unknown, but as a team, they’re formidable.

This Roberto Martinez guy is a joke man. He doesn’t even have balls to make changes when necessary, he doesn’t have a style, just vibes.

Morocco shows up as MAR on scoreboards because FIFA's country codes do not always come from the English name.

A lot of them come from French, which is the working language FIFA has used since it was founded in Paris in 1904. Morocco in French is Le Maroc. First three letters: MAR.

And Morocco is not alone. This happens more than people realise.

Germany is GER, which tracks in English. But then you get to Ivory Coast, which shows up as CIV, from Côte d'Ivoire. Algeria is ALG from Algérie. Haiti is HAI from Haïti. Switzerland is SUI from Suisse. Spain is ESP from España. Iran appears as IRN.

The pattern runs across the entire scoreboards.Some countries are also coded based on whatever their language is.

FIFA built its codes in an era when French dominated international administration, and colonial history shaped which language a country's name was recorded in first.

That legacy is still sitting quietly on every scoreboard at this World Cup.

I keep on revisiting this. You might not realize the depth of what he said. In urdu poetry, there is a concept where poets view God as a lonely being, so lonely that He created free willed humans for company. Loneliness is a Godly trait & whoever enters its realm meets God there

Lukewarm take: we need to stop using mental health/therapy buzzwords in day to day life. Not everyone you dislike is a narcissist. Being sad doesn’t mean you’re depressed. There’s a resounding difference between being nervous and having anxiety. You’re not ADHD because you don’t like to sit still. You’re not autistic because you’re quirky. OCD doesn’t mean you’re organized. And for the love of all that is holy, not every situation that made you uncomfortable is “trauma”.
