Barbara Stanwyck and director Billy Wilder on the set of the iconic noir, “Double Indemnity” (1944). Stanwyck, who was a brunette, had not wanted to go blonde, but Wilder insisted that her character should appear “cheap and fake.” They settled on a wig, which proved both comical and nearly disastrous. It was stiff and unconvincing and Paramount production head Buddy DeSlyva hated it, saying: “We hired Barbara Stanwyck and we got George Washington.” Wilder himself began to find it distracting and unnatural, but it was too late to reshoot. In interviews, he defended the wig staunchly, saying that it subverted the image of the dumb blonde and that Stanwyck loved it. She didn’t. After filming there was a ceremonial burning.
