@DouglasWMiT @cliffwigtil @grimoiresontape Dee had a strong sense of his own importance, but he was also a very pious man. That’s why I like @cliffwigtil's stress on self-examination and self-scrutiny in his contribution. Heart work, in other words. It matters.

@Robin_C_Douglas I think this guy's (OP's) hostility to modern paganism is predicated on its being insufficiently racist and ethnically exclusive, which he reads as a symptom of its 20th century revivalism. To which I can say only –– thank heavens for the 20th century revivalists.

The latter, at least done effectively, are the rarest in my experience. As the follow-up tweet suggests, initiations in many western esoteric traditions are quite disconnected from major life events. Not a problem in itself, but perhaps a notable absence.

I think this is true, with the caveat that ‘initiation’ is so polyvalent a term in occultism that it would be fairly simple to conjure up legitimate counter-examples.

A true initiation is one where afterwards there is no going back. You can change again but you will never be able to be the same person you were before the initiation.

E.g.: initiation as a marker of socio-spiritual transition; initiation as simple conferring of legitimacy within a tradition; as recognition of attainment; as ‘introduction’ to powers; as spark and accelerant for a process of spiritual transformation…

Feeding the birds is a spiritual practise. I get such joy from watching them, a simple pleasure, it is part of my daily gratitude practise. It is an act of kindness from me, that in turn makes me feel grateful. Listen to the language of the birds ; you might learn something.
