I was eating alone at a restaurant. Not because I’m lonely. Because I needed peace. I ordered food and sat by the window watching the city. Then I noticed a small boy. He looked about 7. He was standing outside the restaurant staring in. Not begging. Not shouting. Just… staring. His eyes followed the plates being served. My heart tightened. Then he slowly walked away.
I don’t know why, but something told me to follow him. I went outside. I saw him sitting on the curb with a small bottle of water. I asked gently, “Are you hungry?” He looked up at me and nodded slowly.
So I went back inside. Ordered a meal. Packed it. Came back. Handed it to him. His hands were shaking as he took it. He didn’t even say thank you immediately. He just opened it fast and started eating like his body didn’t trust the food would stay.
I sat beside him quietly. Then after a few bites he whispered: “Thank you… I haven’t eaten since yesterday.” That sentence punched me. Because yesterday? That’s not hunger. That’s suffering.
I asked him where his parents were. He said, “My mom is sick. She sleeps a lot.” I swallowed hard. He kept eating.
Then he said something that broke me completely: “I didn’t want to steal. I just wanted to look.” LOOK. He was looking at food like it was a dream.
That day I went home and couldn’t eat. Because I realized the world is unfair in ways people don’t talk about.
