spending $80b in one year is fucking insane… let me put some perspective so everyone has context—it’s quite literally paradigm-shifting. no single company has ever directed this much capital toward such a concentrated technological bet.

1) $80b is more than the gdp of over 100 countries. for context, new zealand’s government budget is around $110b. microsoft is spending almost that much on a single operational line item for one year.

2) this dwarfs the annual r&d spend of most major tech companies. e.g., google’s total r&d spend was about $40b in 2022. microsoft is essentially doubling down on infrastructure just for ai.

3) the entire apollo program, adjusted for inflation, cost about $280b over a decade. microsoft is spending almost 30% of that in one year. to build data centers.
