Sony recently said that most players now prefer buying games digitally instead of on physical discs, But physical media isn’t going away just yet.
Music CD sales in the U.S. are up 16% compared to last year, with Gen Z helping fuel the comeback.
Many younger people are buying CDs simply because they like owning their music instead of just streaming it.
It’s similar to what has happened with vinyl records. Streaming is still the biggest way people listen to music, but physical formats are making a comeback with younger fans.
I don’t see people talk about classic Sailor Moon’s music enough. Most discussion is see on it is comparisons to Crystal, aesthetics, and that she can beat Goku.
LISTEN TO THIS.
How incredibly tone deaf. Sony really is just trying to avoid the drama by ignoring it
Owning anime physically is arguably more important than games since licensing makes some shows unwatchable legally, BluRays prevent this problem
Sony is also infamously known for removing entire digital libraries of anime content when they merged CR and Funimation (I lost 3 digital copies myself). If they did it back then, nothing stops them from doing it now.
AFAIK BluRays are also quite important for a show’s success in Japan as it helps support the production and fund future seasons, similar to how DVDs gave a second life to movies that would be considered box office flops.
CD sales are booming as physical music makes a comeback. 😍
On Wednesday (July 15), music data service Luminate released its mid-year report, revealing the trend. According to their statistics, CD sales jumped 16 percent to 16.3 million units in the first six months of 2026. This stat greatly outpaced vinyl's 2.4 percent uptick.
The CD resurgence is due to collection building, price accessibility and huge K-Pop album releases. Ironically, approximately half of Gen Z and Millennial CD purchasers do not actually own a CD player, Luminate reports.
Crunchyroll, part of Sony, is severely scaling back availability of anime on phyiscal media 💿 in their specialty store, focusing instead on "collectibles, curated drops, and limited-release products"

With the Tenchi Muyo revival confirmed, gotta bring back the nostalgia of those Toonami end credits with the ambient music. I wish I could just autoplay this in my head when going to sleep. "Talent for Love" is the better ending theme, but this tune is such soothing nostalgia.
