Habib Khabiri, an Iranian footballer and activist, refuses to hold a portrait of Khomeini in 1982...

Khabiri was a defender for the Iranian national football team and played for Tehran's Homa Football Club during the 1970s. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution, he became associated with opposition political groups, particularly the People's Mujahedin of Iran.

The photograph is often cited as showing Khabiri refusing to hold a portrait of Ruhollah Khomeini during a team event in 1982. While the image is widely shared with that description, historians caution that the exact circumstances of the photo are difficult to verify from surviving records alone.

What is well documented is Khabiri's fate. In 1983, at just 29 years old, he was arrested by Iranian authorities during a crackdown on political dissidents. He was imprisoned and later executed in Tehran's Evin Prison in 1984.

Khabiri had represented Iran internationally before the revolution and was considered one of the country's promising footballers. Today, he is remembered not only for his athletic career but also as one of several Iranian athletes whose lives were cut short during the intense political conflicts of the early 1980s. His story remains a symbol of the risks faced by public figures during periods of revolutionary upheaval.

Iranian-born author Marjane Satrapi, who wrote the hit graphic novel Persepolis, was laid to rest on June 19 in Paris amid tributes honoring her work. 

Her graphic novel was later adapted into a Cannes-winning animated film. Known for her wit, provocative and irreverent storytelling, and outspoken positions on human rights, Satrapi was buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery amid commemorations from international artists.
