i’d hate to bring back this discourse if it’s already done but otome is a genre that centers female perspective as the main driving force of its narrative hence why it will always strictly only have FEMALE main character.

erikawa keiko who pioneered the genre stated the reason this genre existed was precisely because the majority of games were (and still are) from MALE perspective, and she wanted to make games for women with a FEMALE main character as the DEFAULT bc she wants to make games from FEMALE perspective, hence why otome means MAIDEN.

AND because women DESERVE to step into the NARRATIVE ROLE and watch the story unfold through their OWN eyes, especially because most otome games talk about topics like sexism (& misogyny).

asking to add a male main character in an otome game is disrespectful, not only because there are lots of other games told from male perspective, but also because the game will no longer be an otome game once there is a male main character option, because these nuances that make otome game will be lost with a male main character.

the main character being a female is an INHERENT and DEFINING trait of otome games that can’t ever be replaced and if you can’t respect the players who want to preserve the meaning of otome genre at least respect the original vision of the people (who are WOMEN) who pioneered the genre.

there are other genres catered to you if you prefer to play in perspectives other than female, and these genres also fall under the joseimuke category (targeted toward women).
