Tho it is a potential problem that ai is scaling so fast for how much power it consumes (the article was saying 4.4% of us grid and growing?) but that's partially an energy infrastructure problem, not just an ai one

@Jollyroger84103 @Ultraman1_ However even so I'm not keen to die on the hill that one ai image gen uses more power than a gaming pc - sorry, that was a knee jerk reaction. The real problem is the scale of ai usage for something that is so demanding, and worse, the ethical problem of ai art in the first place

@Jollyroger84103 @Ultraman1_ The model cited for use is a diffusion model, whereas gpt4o is likely not. Also, OpenAI doesn't share their energy consumption, and we expect their models to be among the largest. The article notes that these estimates are likely inaccurate and prone to undershoot.

And... its not like artists can just leave and find another job if people will use ai instead

None of the ai providers have turned a profit yet, and are kept afloat by venture capital. Unlike past successful ventures, Open AI is losing more money every year and costs are not going down.

Idk how many people are in an average CS match but it's N computers rendering low end 3d graphics and some packets being shot around the net. LLMs consume a lot to generate even a few sentences worth of tokens, let alone a high resolution image.

With jarl coming out, I'd just prefer mech got different tools for beating it other than randomly blasting your entire life total in a turn, both as someone who plays dio and against it
