In 2008, Tata Motors bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford for about $2.3 billion.
At the time, JLR was struggling. It had around 16,000 employees, 3 manufacturing plants, 2 design & engineering centres, sales in 100+ countries and about 288,000 vehicles sold annually.
Tata didn’t erase its British identity.
Instead, it invested heavily in technology, manufacturing, engineering and new products while keeping the brands’ British heritage.
Fast-forward to FY2025:
JLR generated around £29 billion in revenue, sold about 401,000 vehicles, and made around £2.5 billion in profit before tax and exceptional items.
Its Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender brands alone accounted for 67.8% of JLR’s wholesale volumes.
From a struggling business Ford wanted to sell…
