The recent escalation between Iran and the United States has once again put global diplomacy under intense scrutiny. In this unfolding geopolitical scenario, the roles of two South Asian nations—India and Pakistan—have drawn particular attention. While India chose a path of caution and restraint, Pakistan appeared eager to step forward and project itself as an active intermediary.

India possessed the diplomatic credentials to play a meaningful role in easing tensions. Its strategic partnership with the United States, combined with deep-rooted historical and energy ties with Iran, positioned it as a potentially credible and balanced mediator. In line with its long-standing doctrine of “strategic autonomy,” New Delhi could have acted as a bridge between the two adversaries. Yet, it deliberately refrained from taking on such a role.

This restraint appears to be a calculated decision rather than a missed opportunity. India’s heavy dependence on energy imports from the Middle East, the risks of alienating either side, and the potential damage to its global credibility in case of failed mediation likely shaped its cautious approach. As a result, India confined itself to advocating stability and de-escalation, avoiding direct involvement.

In contrast, Pakistan seized the moment. By positioning itself as a venue and facilitator for dialogue, Islamabad attempted to elevate its diplomatic standing. Its geographical proximity to Iran, working relations with both Tehran and Washington, and a clear desire to enhance its global image contributed to this proactive stance. The apparent acceptance of this role by the United States further strengthened Pakistan’s position.

However, the extent of Pakistan’s influence remains open to question. Some Iranian officials have downplayed its role, raising doubts about whether Islamabad is truly shaping outcomes or simply capitalizing on optics. Nevertheless, Pakistan has succeeded in placing itself at the center of the conversation.

This contrast highlights a broader divergence in diplomatic strategy. India prioritized long-term stability, balance, and risk management, while Pakistan emphasized immediacy, visibility, and engagement.

Ultimately, modern diplomacy is no longer defined solely by actions and outcomes—it is equally driven by perception. India has acted as a responsible but understated power, whereas Pakistan has projected itself as an assertive, if somewhat controversial, player.

In the end, the defining question is not just who acted, but who was seen to act.

Anyone who attacks cops, uses violence in public, or vandalises property should suffer the consequences - lose Aadhaar, passport, ration card, driving licence, voter right, employment, children's college enrolment. Plus, mandatory prison sentence. In a matter of hours, Indians will be as law abiding as the people of Britain and nobody will complain.
