If someone had told me at the beginning of my business that I would be standing in the Palais des Nations, where world leaders meet, developing software for the United Nations ๐บ๐ณ, I probably wouldn't have believed them. But that's exactly what happened to us at Devx!
It was my second visit to Geneva, but this time I had the opportunity to see the UN complex itself. People from the UN gave me a tour of the entire complex and I got to the places where the world's most difficult issues are dealt with. Then when I stood in front of the flags of all the countries, I realized what Devx and I had accomplished. And that few people will succeed ๐
Working for the United Nations is sometimes a challenge, mainly because of the bureaucracy. But we've been through it so many times that today we can sail through it fairly quickly. But sometimes it surprises me what problems we have to solve.
For example, during the first project, we drew a map of world borders - just a simple signpost where you click on the country and get to the details. And right after we launched, we got a complaint from one member state that their borders weren't right.
For a regular client, something like this would probably not be on the table at all. So we fixed it and finally created our own map library according to official UN GIS data, where the borders are drawn exactly, including layers for "disputed boundaries". Honestly, I didn't learn so much about geopolitics or geography anywhere else ๐ . Now, thanks to this, we can use the map for every new project and save time and money.
Every meeting is different - you never know who you will meet and what country they will be from. You will quickly get used to different levels of English and different approaches to negotiations. That's perhaps more uninteresting. For the last year, we have been working with people who are originally from, for example, Argentina, Austria, Spain, or Iran.
๐ If you could work on a global project, what problem would you like to solve?
I've been to ISPO in Munich for the third time with Gramino and I'm grateful for the opportunities to get away from my chair for a while to check out the latest news from the outdoor world ๐๏ธ. And like every year, it was a blast ๐ช.
This year, for example, I was surprised by coffee in a tube โ๏ธ, which didn't taste bad at all (No Normal Coffee), or a super nice sun-hoodie ๐ from Turbat (this was the material worn by the thermos god).
It recharged me with energy and the desire to go somewhere for a longer trek. As well as kicking Gramino into further expansion. And here, Devx and I can't wait to launch the new e-shop that we started developing this year.
And it won't be a classic Shoptet or Shopify... that wouldn't be us. Open-source is very much in our blood. I'm still talking about it, because it will be the cutting edge of technology ๐ฅ.
Every obstacle is an opportunity.
Every setback is just a chance for a comeback.
Every crash is just a chance to buy more cheap coins.
Change your perspective and change your life.
Simple as that.
๐๏ธ LIFE ON A TREK - Podcast focused on treks, long-distance crossings, unusual expeditions and everything around it. We do it in our Gramino ultralight hiking equipment special. And now we won 3rd place in the Podcast of the Year poll in our category ๐ฅ
A huge thanks to our fans ๐ซถ who listen to us and David Czempka who has spent tons of time on the road over the last year interviewing our guests ๐๏ธ. Together, our podcasts already have over 600,000 listens on podcast platforms and YouTube. Next year we might reach a million, and we'll be celebrating that for a week ๐.
Over 1,000 podcasts were created in the last year alone, and overall we have around 8,000 podcasts on the Czech scene. When we started two years ago, we didn't even realize how great a community we would build around us. In addition to podcasts, we also started organizing the Life on Trek festival, which will be held again this year after great reviews ๐ช.
The whole Podcast of the Year event was great and we thank the organizers for putting in the work. I have to highlight the incredible performance of Lukรกลก Hejlรญk, who moderated the whole event perfectly despite the clouds of technical problems. I'm really laughing ๐.
Why does it make sense for us to have two CTOs in the company? ๐จโ๐ป๐จโ๐ป Simply because our two CTOs are not only technical directors, but also architects who stand at the birth of every project. They are the people who are responsible for the right technical solution, long-term sustainability, in short, everything from the first idea to the final product.
And not only that - they are also partners and owners of Devx.
What sets them apart is their deep inner motivation. For them, code is not just a job, but a passion โค๏ธ. He believes in quality and precision, which is reflected in every line of code he writes. For them, no compromise that would jeopardize the technological level of the project is acceptable. And yes, it may seem like a clichรฉ, but both of them are really people who will turn down a job if we were to build a project just casually.
Our CTOs want to do interesting and innovative things, and their approach has allowed us to do so so far. They are people who live for what they do. Their enthusiasm and expertise keep moving our company forward ๐.
And THAT IS DEVX - a team that believes in what they do. A team where technology is not just a tool, but the heart of every project.
Thanks guys for being great partners for 8 years! Michal Karzel Tomasz Pilch
