Gujarati Folk isn’t the problem. Stagnation is.
And somewhere along the way, we’ve confused preservation with repetition.
I love Gujarati folk. The more I’ve understood it, the deeper my respect has grown. Legends like Maniraj Barot didn’t just perform folk.. they elevated it, protected it, and gave it identity.
But what are we doing with that inheritance today?
We’re looping it.
Repackaging the same songs.
Recycling the same emotions.
Selling nostalgia as innovation.
Let’s be honest.. there’s very little difference between a Garba singer repeating traditional lyrics and an orchestra singer doing Bollywood covers. Both are performing. Very few are creating.
And creation is where art begins. That’s why something like Garba Shuffle can never feel like a true artistic victory. It works, yes. It entertains, yes. But it doesn’t belong to us. The soul of it isn’t original. And without originality, there is no evolution.
The uncomfortable truth is that most artists in this space are choosing comfort over courage.
There are people earning crores, travelling the world, performing the same set every year but not taking a single creative risk. Not writing. Not experimenting. Not failing.
Because failure is expensive. And comfort pays well.
We say, “This is what the audience wants.”
But that’s not what an artist is supposed to do.
An artist doesn’t serve demand.
An artist creates it.
If we only give people what they already like, we’re not artists.. we’re suppliers. And somewhere, the strong business instinct of Gujarat has started dominating its artistic soul. We’ve mastered selling what works, but we’ve stopped building what’s next.
“There is no market” is the biggest myth we keep hiding behind.
Markets are not found.
They are created.
And creating your own space, your own voice, is far more fulfilling than fitting into an existing one.
The tragedy is, we don’t lack material.
We have incredible literature.
Untouched stories.
Rich villages.
Unique sounds.
Unexplored rhythms.
We have everything.
Except the hunger to get uncomfortable.
Except the courage to fail.
Except the intent to go beyond what’s already working.
And that’s why the culture isn’t evolving.
This is why Gujarati Entertainment is not as Global as Gujarati People.
Thankfully, there are a few who are choosing a different path. Artists who are building something original, something personal, something new.
They are not the safest bets.
But they are the future.
If you truly want Gujarati entertainment to grow, don’t just consume what’s popular.
Support what’s original.
Buy tickets for artists trying something new.
Stream independent music.
Show up at open mics.
Encourage the kid making music in a bedroom studio.
They may not be perfect.
They may not sound polished.
But they are trying to create.. not copy.
And that matters.
Because the ones already making crores don’t need your money anymore.
The ones with ideas do.
The ones with hunger do.
The ones willing to fail do.
If you want a stronger culture tomorrow,
don’t reward repetition today.
Chase originality. That’s where the real future of Gujarati entertainment lies.
Nobody talks about what happens after you get that PG seat.

Boomers vs Gen Z
Boomers finally have a match in GenZ in terms of entitlement and giving it back.
Millennials just hustled with a sigh.
Pretty sure the doctor-patient altercation might increase.
We kept on shouting for ages for a protection act. Fell on deaf ears.
Okay - we shall do the violence ourselves.
Am I defending this act. 100%
The same way you defended every act on violence against doctor.
If you didn’t speak up then - there is no need to make a hue-cry now.
