A PlayStation 5 owner faced a 30 minute lockout from a digital copy of Ghost of Yotei. The console required a lengthy network license verification process to start the game.

Such issues occur due to rights verification on secondary devices. During server or internet outages launching any purchased digital games becomes completely blocked.

Physical discs protect from these errors but Sony will stop making them in January 2028. In the future players will depend entirely on company online servers.

Sony’s decision to stop making physical PlayStation games after January 2028 is now being used against the company in a major lawsuit.

The lawsuit, seeking $457 million in damages, argues that Sony can no longer claim players have the option to buy physical copies if they don’t like PlayStation Store prices.

Once new games are no longer released on disc, the PlayStation Store will become the main place to buy new PlayStation games.

Law professor Daniel Wallach told that Sony has “essentially destroyed its own defense,” because the company can no longer point to physical discs as an alternative for consumers.

Rappelez-vous, Sony a déjà fait machine arrière dans son histoire suite à la gronde des joueurs. Tout est possible tant qu’on ne lâche rien.

Pour que Santa Monica en vienne à préciser qu’il y aura un disque pour le prochain God of War, il est évident que les développeurs, studios PlayStation, ne sont pas forcément d’accord avec cette décision. Il y a des conflits même internes sur le sujet, et un vrai clivage qui a été créé.

Ne pas oublier que la majorité des jeux first Party Sony sont plus achetés en physique qu’en demat. Les joueurs veulent les avoir en boîte pour ces titres là. Astro Bot s’est mieux vendu en physique par exemple sur les derniers chiffres que nous avons.

Aucune entreprise n’est intouchable, seuls les consommateurs feront la différence à la fin.

Sony getting rid of physical media is probably the dumbest game industry blunder from a major player since the Sega 32x

They might last another generation or two, but if they don’t get their act together, they’re going the way of the Dreamcast.

“A disc is a game you actually own." More than 200,000 people have signed a petition urging Sony to keep physical game discs.

On July 1, Sony announced it will stop producing discs for new releases by January 2028, saying more players are choosing digital downloads.

The petition comes from Jade Pearce, CEO of Canadian independent video game retailer @PNPGames. Pearce argues that ending physical games would take away players' ability to truly own the games they buy while putting retailers, distributors, and manufacturers that rely on physical media at risk.
