Who is smuggling Ugandaโs key medicinal plants from Game Parks to Europe?
The researchers found that four of the documented plant species, Tamarindus indica (enkoge), Warburgia ugandensis (balwegira), Mitragyna rubrastipulata (mutamatama), and Mondia whitei (mulondo), are listed on both the global and national red lists of threatened species, and were identified as having experienced a sharp population decline. The decline in medicinal plant availability was attributed to several factors, including illicit trade to Europe. โThese plants are experiencing a significant decline due to overharvesting and the absence of sustainable use and conservation plans,โ Tugume says.

To develop the tourism industry, you need exposure. If you haven't travelled beyond Kirigime, you can't understand what foreign tourists want.
Uganda is unique, undeniably, including planting seasons and terrapia. We have 1006 bird species. Animals in national parks have multiplied. Beautiful Ankole cows are a sight to behold. We have impressive waterfalls, cliffs for climbing, caves to explore, and rivers to raft. We have the Mountain Gorillas, as well as other primates, who are so well socialised that they want to hug you.
We have sunshine and snow, mountain peaks to climb, and fantastic biking and hiking trails.
We have wonderful, kind people serving in the industry.
However, we miss good roads, cost-efficient air transport, a variety of accommodation options, food tailored to foreign tourists, locally made crafts, and staff trained to serve the foreign market.
It is hard to convince foreign tourists to spend two to three extra days in Uganda just to drive and sit in traffic. That's two extra nights in lodges and hotels, and another day to recover from the drive.
Someone mentioned how Ugandans get excited to ride a metro in other countries. But that's not a tourism offering, that's normal to have. Good transport options are a normal thing in other tourist destinations.
Restaurant and accommodation owners: do you take your staff out to eat at nice restaurants, so they can learn how customers should be served? It's a small investment compared to what your staff can learn during those couple of hours. Try to do it sometimes.
And while we keep the hotel rooms impeccably clean, we don't care to repair issues as they happen. Blocked showers, toilets that fail to flush, low water pressure, doors and drawers falling out of hinges, wobbly chairs and tables, uneven walkways, rotten wooden decks, windows that can't close and torn mosquito nets... These are the things that leave a very poor impression, no matter how charming and hospitable we are.
Finally, without focusing on developing domestic tourism, we will not get far. A customer with purchasing power who lives in the country and has not gone from Kampala to Mweya is going to go to Dubai or Mombasa. We need to collect our quick wins domestically.
Also, someone please tell that dude to stop talking about Nile tilapia and Nile perch, as both species were introduced to Lake Nalubale by the British, and killed hundreds of endemic species that could have been another amazing tourism attraction today.
