So the government has responded to our petition, “Teach Britain’s colonial past as part of the UK’s compulsory curriculum” with a statement that is so superficial it borders on insulting. Here’s how you can help us refute this:

This evening I led @HoCpetitions debate where I called on the government to include black history and cultural diversity in the curriculum. This would provide new ways to understand our past, the world we currently live in and make history more relevant to people’s lives

Another speaker discusses the false binary often created between race and class, pointing out that the stories *say* they are interested in ending inequalities “but in reality they aren’t interested in ending inequality at all”

Another speaker brings up the fact that bringing Black history into the same curriculum is the same as bringing in working class histories - they are closely linked.

@Afzal4Gorton says that the petition is a chance for a radical change in the curriculum, so that it recognises the experiences of all. He brings up the Diverse Curriculum Charter (backed by us!) to show how important this is.

The chair @Chris_EvansMP is currently discussing how the curriculum is largely American-centric. (paraphrased) “Students learn about the bus boycotts in the US but not the boycotts in Bristol”

@Chris_EvansMP is talking about the inaccessibility of history as it is currently taught. “A diverse curriculum is necessary to provide new entry points into history.” He highlights the importance of studying women in history, in particular women of colour such as Mary Seacole.
