One of my all time favourite documentaries. It’s both painful and beautiful and most importantly evokes hope.
I spent nearly two decades working in a high secure prison with men written off as “untreatable psychopaths”. Excluded or ejected from prison offending behaviour programmes or considered too high risk to even start them. I was often asked “how on earth do you do this job?”
When I devised a treatment programme for these men in the Fens Unit at HMP Whitemoor, I knew what they first needed was the capacity to heal their own hurt child. If they couldn’t feel their own pain, how could they possibly understand the hurt they’d caused others?
The priority for the start of treatment was to create a space where men felt safe enough to sit alongside others and begin to contemplate connecting with their pain. The Work shows up close what miracles happen when hate is met with compassion. This week you can catch the @LockedUpLiving conversation that me and @wolvercoteman held with one of the Directors, Gethin Aldous.
