“There is nothing more to be said or to be done tonight, so hand me over my violin & let us try to forget for half an hour the miserable weather & the still more miserable ways of our fellow-men.”
Arthur Conan Doyle, The Five Orange Pips
Sherlock Holmes “born” 6th January 1861
Back alley in Whitechapel, London. One of my favourite back alleys, in fact. Off the busy main street here, you walk through an archway and seemingly into another world and another time, of cobbled streets and Victorian buildings.
This sewage pumping station in London is a sight to behold. 🤩
Opened #OnThisDay in 1865 by Joseph Bazalgette, Crossness Pumping Station is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering.
It was part of Bazalgette’s sewage system, which contributed to eradicating cholera in the city.
