[UK-based Investigative journalist and researcher Zulkarnain Saer Khan told ThePrint that while Bangladeshis have long-standing grievances against the two dailies, these fringe protests cannot be construed as any form of curbs on press freedom as the government has thrown its weight behind the two newspapers and has provided all forms of security.

Admittedly, @ProthomAlo did some great work during the protests. But once Sheikh Hasina fled, Prothom Alo reverted to type: which is riling up its reader base against the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP and pushing the Indian agenda. Remember, it was Prothom Alo who made it seem like Rahul Ananda was a victim of a mob attack because of his religious beliefs. It was Prothom Alo’s reports that were cited by the Indian media to create the narrative that Hindus in Bangladesh are in danger because Godmother Hasina was no longer there to protect them.

At the same time, you would be hard-pressed to find any of the commendable steps taken by the @bdbnp78 leadership on its front pages, but it sure gave a big treatment to BNP workers’ rent-seeking in the transport sector. BNP’s acting chairman @trahmanbnp ordered his party men to guard properties and places of worship of minorities and yet you wouldn’t find it in Prothom Alo’s front pages. Mr Rahman along with BNP’s secretary general Mr Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir repeatedly told the public to call the police on BNP men if they were caught seeking rent, and the party even took action against its workers who were found guilty. Alas, no news on Prothom Alo’s front page. When it can freely report on all of Sheikh Hasina’s crimes in the past 15 years, it is hyper-focused on painting the BNP in the worst possible light — which, to me, is dishonest journalism. Here, I must say that Prothom Alo’s partner-in-crime, @dailystarnews , is doing much better when it comes to giving due treatment to BNP’s news.

And yesterday, the paper well and truly exposed itself. It ran a report insinuating that BNP had colluded with S Alam Group and was working on rehabilitating the disgraced business group that was a close collaborator of Hasina. What happened was the BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed, who was abducted to India a decade ago, returned to his home town Cox’s Bazar on the 28th of August. There was a massive crowd gathered at the Cox’s Bazar airport to receive him organised by the local BNP leaders. In that rush, Mr Ahmed got on the first vehicle that was available and left. Prothom Alo dug out the vehicle’s registration details, which turned out to be in the name of S Alam. The paper ran the report in a manner that created the impression that Mr Ahmed has been in talks with S Alam Group and asked for a vehicle from them to ferry him around in Cox’s Bazar. To establish its narrative that BNP was colluding with S Alam Group, it brought up the incident of luxury cars being confiscated from S Alam’s factory and BNP workers supervising the whole operation. Never mind that the BNP has taken stern action against those party workers — this was mentioned in passing and at this point of the report, the reader would have made up its mind on the BNP-S Alam nexus. Is this objective journalism or a motivated report?

Today, Mr Ahmed has given his explanation about the incident, but guess what is the headline of Prothom Alo’s report? BNP seeks an explanation from Salahuddin Ahmed. Truly a shameful spot of information engineering in the name of journalism.

1. Post peoples’ upsurge in Bangladesh needs deliberate evaluation of the complete spectrum of the statecraft functioning, especially in the security sector. The security situation of Bangladesh is vulnerable as the key security apparatus, Bangladesh Police, has been non-functional since 5 August 2024. Police have started to function with hesitation and nonconfidence since 15 August under the protection of Bangladesh Army. 

The atrocities and unprofessional actions by police, RAB, Ansar has led to the current situation of lawlessness. Still there are miscreants and other vested quarters of the previous regime working at different parts and organisations of the country to enforce anarchy and force this government to fail, one of such events was displayed in Gopalgonj. Still Sheikh Hasina with the auspices of India is continuously fomenting and instructing the culprits, hooligans to continue anti-state activities. Her son Sojib Wazed Joy is also propagating misinformation in Indian media. Indian media, especially the true-blue royalist to BJP continues to propagate against the present government. Still important civil and military appointments in Bangladesh are held by officers extremely and unethically loyal to the previous regime. 

Mere shuffling of the top echelon will not defuse the threat and challenges perceived. This is dangerous for the life of even Chief Advisor, CAS and other important personalities.

2. The previous regime, like all other institutions and organisations, destroyed professionalism, chain of command and best practices of the all professional security providers through politicisation, rampant practice of nepotism, nurturing sycophancy, absence of accountability, and so on and so forth. On top of it, Indian intelligence (RAW) is directly operating inside Bangladesh, the nest of which has been established with the support of the previous government, few corrupt politicians from Awami League, influential minority population, civil and military bureaucracy. 

The ultimate objective of India was to make Bangladesh a vassal state of India with the direct support of Sheikh Hasina. Organisation like ISKON overtly and covertly worked rampantly against the interest of Bangladesh and in favour of India with the support of the previous regime. Surprisingly, one of the Ministers publicly declared that he is the member of ISKON (Education Minister during the previous regime) since he studied in India.The previous regime for their existence did so as they lost their credibility and popularity since 2014. In return, India could ink many disproportionate agreements with Bangladesh which went in favour of India.
