Did you know?
Victor Ma. Regis “Vico” Sotto was a student from the University of the Philippines Diliman – College of Law?
He graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and the same year entered UP Law as a freshman.
He was a UP Law student up until 2nd year sometime 2012-2013.
He realized that law school wasn’t a good fit for him because he was convinced to take up Master’s in Public Management from the Ateneo School of Government (ASOG) by Dean Tony La Viña.
He took up Public Management because one of his idols in public service is the late Jessie Robredo, who has a Master’s in Business Administration from UP and Master of Public Administration from Harvard.
The decision to leave law school and pursue Public Management seems to be a wise one in hindsight given that as a Mayor, Vico Sotto is less of a lawmaker and more of a public administrator much like former Mayor Jessie Robredo.
Everything comes back full circle as the law school he left has now invited him back to deliver a commencement speech to the graduates of 2026 UP Law, many of who will be politicians as well.
I’m quite sure Vico Sotto was invited because he is a role model for the rule of law, good governance, and public service.
I hope all lawyers and politicians, not just those from UP Law, look up to the example set by Vico Sotto on his 3rd term as Pasig City Mayor.
TRIVIA:
I was a 2nd year law student when Vico Sotto was a 1st year law student and we were of the same Bloc Letter – Bloc C.
It was the job of the sophomores to help introduce the freshmen to law school life so my class 2nd year Bloc C was the one that assisted 1st year Bloc C, which included Vico, in learning about UP Law and law school life.
So yes, I can personally attest that Vico Sotto was a UP Law student.
I can’t say he doesn’t inspire me. Now, Vico Sotto is teaching me by his example of what a politician should be.
👏👏👏

GRADUATION LIGHTNING RALLY BRIEFLY HALTED
LOOK: A lightning rally, a longstanding tradition across the University of the Philippines System where graduating students and student leaders raise sectoral and national issues during commencement exercises, was briefly interrupted at the 47th Commencement Exercises of the University of the Philippines Visayas.
According to campus publication Pagbutlak, UP Visayas University Student Council Chairperson Aljo Benedicto was initially blocked by security personnel before the rally could begin. After a brief confrontation, he was allowed to proceed, and the lightning rally continued without further interruption. | via Ian Peter Guanzon #CDNDigital
