#Maldives 🇲🇻: The IFJ strongly condemns the jailing of MJA VP Mohamed Shahzan and Adhadhu journalist Leevan Ali Nasir, following the nation's gag order on all public discussion regarding allegations on President Muizzu's personal life
@mjamaldives
They may silence one. They may silence two. But they cannot silence all of us, not if we decide they can't.
The chilling effect only works if we let it. So don't let it. 6/6
If you are a journalist in the Maldives, your silence right now is not neutrality. It is permission. They are counting on you to look away from your colleagues. Solidarity journalism is not optional. It is survival. 5/6
But here is what they cannot do. They cannot jail all of us. They cannot raid every phone, every account, every voice. Solidarity is the only antidote to a chilling effect. And solidarity starts with refusing to be divided. 4/6
Solidarity journalism is the antidote. They can silence one journalist but they can not silence an entire press corps that refuses to be divided neither can they silence an entire public that refuses to look away. 2/6
Journalist and MJA Vice President @MohamedShahzan has been sentenced to 15 days in jail for questioning President Muizzu.
Journalist @MrLeevaaan has been sentenced to 10 days in jail for reporting on a court order.
