Zack Snyder did NOT understand the core tenets of Superman in the slightest but, rather went for a fundamentally flawed 'deconstruction' (witch I don't think he even knows what that actually means) and chose to apply the sensibilities of the dark knight returns and watchmen to a character that never either fit those sensibilities nor was ever written with those sensibilities.
Snyder should have NEVER been allowed to lay hands on the DC property and thanks to him we have had a entire decade of many thinking that the only way Superman is 'interesting' is if he's a Jesus allegory (which he isn't, he's Moses) and also make him a edgy cynical nihilist to our 'contemporary' world when Superman is literally aspiration incarnate; for the people of earth to do better and better by each other, he is the very pinnacle of that. And to this day, people thinking that what he actually stands for 'bad' or 'out of fashion' not only you don't believe in anything morally good or decent but you really never had much hope to begin with.
