Agreed. Would extend this by highlighting the true privilege of an ideal PhD setting is you should truly be free to explore every facet of what you believe will push humanity forward the most. It’s a noble effort to do so and it is ok to fall short here and there, but you have to try.
It’s different than a normal job because of your agency in picking the problem you want to work on. And honestly, if you don’t find yourself deeply consumed by the questions you want to tackle through your PhD you probably shouldn’t be doing it.
I don’t agree. A PhD student should not prioritize work-life balance.
Getting to do a PhD is a privilege. You are paid to think. There is no pressure for you to be economically useful. It is a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of human knowledge and produce something ground breaking.
And nothing great ever happens without complete devotion. Look at everything that moved and shaped the world. Every single person who created anything meaningful, in science, in arts, in music, in movies, devoted their lives to their craft.
Extraordinary outcomes require extraordinary inputs and some degree of sacrifice. Sure, have work-life balance during your PhD. But be content a mediocre outcome.
Yeah I get that. If I had to pick I would probably pick something with an insanely long coherence time, and then superconducting or similar purely for speed, and find a way to do any to any connectivity via the interconnect or memory qubits. Like tunable cavity coupling for interconnect maybe
