Congratulations to Amb Dallafior on her historic appointment as OPCW Director-General @OPCW_DG. As her term begins, in a time of escalating chemical weapons-related threats, I assure her of our continued close cooperation to uphold the global norm against these inhumane weapons.
Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for me.
Walking through the doors of the @OPCW as Director-General for the first time was a reminder that this Organisation's greatest strength is its people.
I am inspired by the dedication and professionalism of the Technical Secretariat and excited to begin listening, learning, and working together to build on the OPCW’s achievements.
I thank Amb. Viet @dohungviet for his leadership - it has been a pleasure to work closely with him over the past several months. He brought many innovations to improve the process and a real humility to listen to and respect diverse perspectives. Something we really needed!
I regret that NPT States Parties could not reach agreement on an outcome document. At a time of growing global instability, NPT remains the cornerstone of our collective security. Next five years must be time for our collective efforts to restore credibility of the Treaty.
UNODA High Representative @INakamitsu regrets that States parties to the NPT were unable to agree on outcome document. It remains the cornerstone of our collective security architecture. States should make use of all available avenues for dialogue to eliminate the nuclear threat.
My message to the upcoming NPT Review Conference:
“The diplomatic path is demanding, often frustrating, and rarely produces the dramatic breakthroughs that capture headlines, but it remains the only path that does not court catastrophe.”

Pope Francis was a true inspiration and hope for people of all faiths, worked for peace and for the poorest and most vulnerable, and was a strong supporter of UN efforts.
Humanity and humility I’ve learned from him will continue to guide my service for a “united human family”.
There is a “once in a lifetime moment” - I had such a moment today. Private audience with His Holiness Pope Francis @Pontifex gave me strength, inspiration & courage for our work for peace through disarmament efforts. His warmth, humility & love for people touched me deeply.
Delighted to be in Geneva - the birthplace of #1972BWC to mark the 50th anniv. of the Biological Weapons Convention.
Hearing from experts & stakeholders, I am assured we can safeguard a future where the use of biological weapons is not only unthinkable but outright impossible.
Honored to join @UN_PGA & @UNECOSOC yesterday for the first joint UNGA - ECOSOC meeting focused on how illicit small arms hinder socioeconomic development & SDGs. Excited to work together to mitigate the negative impact of SALW in line with the calls of the Pact for the Future.
