On May 3, 1947, the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) was established, blessed by Mahatma Gandhi and shaped by national leaders including Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, and Gulzarilal Nanda.

Launched just months before India’s independence, INTUC emerged from a historic conference in Delhi attended by over 200 unions representing more than 5.6 lakh workers. The conference was inaugurated by Acharya J.B. Kripalani, presided over by Sardar Patel, and addressed by Pandit Nehru, who reminded everyone that India’s working class was not a separate class, but the backbone of national development.

Rooted in India’s soil, INTUC was built on democratic values and Gandhian principles of justice, dignity, and peaceful progress.

Recently Gautam Adani’s nephew - who is a director in several Adani Group companies - has been accused of insider trading by sharing unpublished, price-sensitive information with his brother-in-law which resulted in “ill-gotten gains” of Rs 90 lakh.

Will SEBI once again let the Prime Minister’s favourite business group off with a slap on the wrist? Or will it prosecute the case to the full extent of the law?

Meanwhile, the people of India are still waiting for SEBI to complete the investigation into Adani’s violation of 24 counts of securities laws. It has been 26 months since the Supreme Court directed SEBI to complete its investigation following the Hindenburg revelations. Meanwhile SEBI’s US counterpart -the Securities and Exchange commission (SEC) - has been much more proactive since it received evidence that, between 2020 and 2024, Gautam Adani and seven associates offered Rs 2,000 crore in bribes to Indian officials to secure solar power contracts that would have yielded over Rs 16,000 crore in profits.

The Modi government has predictably chosen not to assist the SEC — now acting under President Donald Trump’s administration - in serving a legal summons to Adani despite repeated requests for assistance from the SEC, according to a 25 April 2025 SEC update.

Karnataka, with its leadership in digital health, biotechnology and strong public-private R&D ecosystem, is well-placed to partner with Kobe on next-gen healthcare solutions. We discussed potential areas of collaboration such as genomic diagnostics and regenerative medicine.

Given Japan's participation in our Global Innovation Alliance (GIA) programme, there’s a real opportunity for the state to use platforms like Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC), CCAMP and IBAB to enable smoother market access between Japan and India. Together, we can reduce the distance between Kobe and Karnataka possibly through a dedicated biotech corridor that drives innovation and impact across both regions.
