—There’s Really No Need to See Jing Boran as Competition—
In a recent interview, Jing Boran reflected on his career, the choices he made when he was younger, and why meeting Luan Nian at this particular stage of his life felt like the right timing.
“When I was younger, I spent a lot of time running forward. I worked very hard, but I was also quite blind. I wanted to do well, and I wanted to be seen.
But now that I’ve reached this stage of my life, I feel like I’m telling myself that what I need to cultivate is a kind of inner self-mastery. I’ve already passed the age where I feel I need to keep running.
Once you develop that sense of self-command, you become much more peaceful about everything. And when you look back from that place, what you see are mostly pleasant surprises.
A lot of people wonder why Jing Boran didn’t act in idol dramas when he was younger. I’ve actually been thinking about this question recently too. Throughout my journey and growth as an actor, I’ve wondered about it, especially because we now live in an era so driven by traffic and popularity. I’ve asked myself whether the choices I made back then were really the right ones.
But The Early Spring gave me an answer.
I think encountering this character at this particular age allowed me to bring just the right amount of emotion, expression, and depth to shaping him. If I had played a character like this a few years earlier, perhaps he wouldn’t have had the same flavor he has now.”
[In other words, his current age, accumulated life experience, and emotional maturity gave the character a particular texture that his younger self probably couldn’t have produced in quite the same way.]
“At this point in my life, when it comes to being an actor, I’m very much at ease. I approach it without too much ambition or desire.”
And maybe that’s why there’s really no need to see Lao Jing as some kind of hypothetical competition. He doesn’t seem interested in endlessly running against other people anymore. He’s moving at his own pace, choosing what feels right for him at this stage of his life and career
