There is a rising number of students with disabilities enrolled in the mainstream sector who have faced suspension and exclusion from school over the past decade, typically due to “problem behavior.”
It's time to end segregation.

@DrKatedeBruin Special educators have attributes that are so valuable for students with disability. They chose to work with them as they like them, they are able to break tasks down into manageable steps and they are used to adapting the environment. We need them working in mainstream.
Special school educators!
There are kids in mainstream right now who cannot access your expertise & kids in special schools who would benefit from broader access to the academic curriculum.
Ending #Segregation isn't an existential threat
It's systemic improvement for ALL students
There's nothing "special"
about segregation - the sugar-coated euphemism masks the reality of a practice that is not evidence-based, is discriminatory and in violation of human rights recognised by the @UN#CRPD#EndSegregation#DisabilityRC
We call on governments to adopt #DisabilityRC Recommendation 7.14 and commit to achieving universally accessible, quality and inclusive education that does not separate children on the basis of disability in order to provide them with the supports they need to learn and thrive.
All students should have access to the academic curriculum & quality reading/writing instruction.
A sensory curriculum is not an education. It is neglect.

@CatiaMalaquias WA had community LACs who were chosen for their values and given extensive values based training. They would oversee many of the people captured by these services. With the change to NDIS the WA government shut down disability services. No effective oversight now.
@CatiaMalaquias @DRC_AU We can only hope that they have received the message that segregated education is preparation for a life apart and a fundamental denial of the human rights of the students. It must end. Fence sitting or playing with 'parent choice' arguments as a justification would be immoral.
Olivia loves her school!
There are so many benefits to inclusive education including better academic and vocational outcomes than their peers in non-inclusive settings, and greater social interaction and more opportunities to establish and maintain friendships. #WithUsNotForUs
The most basic question is: Where do students go after 12 years of segregated education? We all know the answer. What have we taught their peers by segregating them for the whole school time? These are moral issues.
There are excellent teachers in ALL environments, but there's no "guarantee" that greater expertise exists in segregated settings. I'm aware of some segregated environments where zero teachers have additional qualifications. https://t.co/04uVSlJKS9
Anybody not attending @QDNltd "Disability Is An Election Issue" may be mildly interested to know there was a Shorten/Katter catfight, the LNP no-showed, and Hanson's One Nation rep said it supported defunding the NDIS.
I am looking forward to speaking at a #DefendOurNDIS forum today organised by @carlfthompson about how the NDIS can be improved for children and young people with disability. Its not too late to register https://t.co/1OHteTASw8 @EveryAustralian@CydaAu
The NDIS that we all advocated so hard for is now facing death by a thousand cuts. But we are ready to #DefendOurNDIS!
Support our social media blitz today to help us make some noise & join the “Big Night In” at 7pm.
