@PirateMike911@lanthiertax In that case, doesn’t it just mean the NDP are wildly off target on who needs to be paying more tax? I’m not sure this is the great argument you think it is.
@vancitysense@TheChaosWeeber Because it captures wealth and consumption - which income taxes very often don’t. Additionally, sales taxes are routinely offset by corresponding low-income credits.
@theserfstv It would be roughly the 18th different tax hike on the same dollars since the NDP were elected. The cumulative impact is rather substantial. This government has a far bigger problem with spending than revenue and very clearly have no intention of changing it.
@JimsonHogarth@lanthiertax Say hello again to some old friends… these are not new taxes, we’re just bringing back the HST *and* the BC Carbon Tax!
(It would be better policy than anyone is actually promising - surely the voters can see that, right?)
@The_Clermontian@Cadeyrnn Two of the third parties are barely on the ballot and the third’s leader is practically a teenager. A more realistic poll for third parties.
@TheChaosWeeber Someone was recently pushing some numbers indicating that 5% of all US households exceed a million USD income in at least one single tax year as an argument for why so many people oppose higher taxes that “don’t affect them”. How many do you suppose earn 200k at least once?
Deemed disposition hits RRSPs/RRIFs hard if nontrivial balance, nevermind other investments and/or secondary properties, but it’s quite the reach to pretend this is a problem impacting the other 80% of society.
@TheChaosWeeber Just call this 48% the Jimmy Pattison backlash. Wait ‘til we see how centrists react to the sprint left. It won’t quite match Carney because people actually know his name, but…
@FraserHarland@trevortombe As the revenue neutral carbon tax went up, those tax brackets came down. Then Eby broke the BC Lib bargain, spent all the extra money and plenty more, and then axed the tax to barely save his skin last election. The money needs to come from somewhere and there aren’t enough rich!
@matt_kercher If it was the difference between life or death, hey, everyone does their part. But its best-case projection actually only addresses … 7% of the current deficit while crippling growth? The Eby NDP just keep demonstrating they can’t be trusted to run the province another minute.
@GoodTheDoctor I felt that way back before my family’s combined housing costs hit 7k/mo, too, but you know, good old Vancouver and not wanting to repeatedly move kids due to renovictions.
@GoodTheDoctor@mapleblooded The number one issue on incomes like that is taxes. Before the NDP and Trudeau, the max BC marginal rate was 43.7%. Now 53.5% and this pledge takes to 57.5%, granted last two percent on lofty amounts. But it still raises NOTHING compared to deficit. Spending problem, not revenue!
@TheChaosWeeber The momentary thrill of trolling will quickly fade as the NDP support drops like a stone for running a "light all credibility on fire" campaign that even their own moderate candidates & future leaders don't want their names attached to. Even the reddit lefties hate this! Reddit!
@Prominent_Bryan BC isn’t the least taxed past a certain point in/around the 80-90th percentile, Alberta is. Now, mind you the only reason BC was the lowest taxed in the first place was that this was the advantage gained from the originally “revenue neutral” carbon tax, now a giant hole.
@TheChaosWeeber Uneducated non-voters in marginal jobs mildly impressed with socialism in campaign shocker. This will absolutely have an impact on the extremely safe conservative seat(s) they live in! Are you listening to yourself?
@TheChaosWeeber Income taxes are already too high, raising them more will genuinely backfire. The proper move is to significantly increase sales taxes and the corresponding offsetting credits for lower incomes. Not going to lose any sleep over it, though, since the NDP are cooked.
