When 17-year-old @indeever_m pet angelfish died, he decided to sequence its genome – the first time this species has been sequenced. Read the full @newscientist article & wait for more news in 2023 on #nanopore sequencing as an educational tool https://t.co/L7HlUfz7BO 17/23

Just 17, @indeever_m recently became the first person to sequence a freshwater angelfish. He designed, led, and funded the project. His work was initially noticed by #bioinformatician Richard Abdill and used kits from @nanopore#genomics@bioCURIOUSlab https://t.co/tlr49BFtIo
High school student @indeever_m became the first person to sequence the genome of a freshwater angelfish (AKA his pet “Calvin”) and we love everything about this story. 🧬🐠❤️https://t.co/9uCjnBUjnY
So impressed by high school student @indeever_m who wanted to pay tribute to his pet and used NEB Monarch Genomic DNA Extraction kit on @nanopore#MinION to sequence the first ever angelfish genome. Read more at https://t.co/ZraS7NqCsz
High school student, @indeever_m used #MinION to assemble the first ever angelfish genome. He decided to sequence its genome to contribute to the scientific community, while also paying a tribute to his pet. Read here: https://t.co/8RUiH1fv31 #AnythingAnyoneAnywhere
@richabdill Indeever is a senior at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley @BASISIndSV and was in my biotech class last year (which he could have taught himself). He is also a prizewinner in the CA Synopsis Science Fair, and a Davidson Fellow. He is a great student and passionate about science.
@richabdill @Micropub7n I named this angelfish Calvin (after the comic books), but I have 70 more angelfish just like him that I hand-raised from their birth. I hatched live baby brine shrimp to feed the fish fry back in August 2020.
Wow. I didn't realize this fun project of mine would gain so much traction! I did in fact use my dead pet fish for this research. Even though my fish isn't alive, I'm glad a piece of it is still living on forever! @nanopore
@richabdill Thank you so much for the kind words! I always love working with @Micropub7n and the team for their thorough and streamlined review process. This is my second publication with them.
Hi Everyone! Check out my project on https://t.co/eGU1XS6mbK where I'm fundraising to sequence the genome of the freshwater angelfish! Any amount helps!
