Marvel Unveils Sierra Leonean-British Actor David Jonsson as the New Black Panther

Marvel Studios has officially announced British actor David Jonsson, who is of Sierra Leonean and Swedish descent, as the new Black Panther during its presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

Jonsson will portray Prince T'Challa II, the grown son of the late King T'Challa, continuing the Black Panther legacy following the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Director Ryan Coogler also confirmed he will return to direct Black Panther 3, which is scheduled for release on 15 December 2028.

Best known for his roles in Industry, Rye Lane, and Alien: Romulus, Jonsson's appointment has been widely welcomed by Marvel fans. His Sierra Leonean heritage has also sparked excitement among many Sierra Leoneans celebrating his rise to one of Hollywood's biggest superhero roles.

Some stories really touch your heart.

I recently filmed and edited Ramatu Vamboi's story using only my smartphone. Sitting with her and listening to how her life has changed was very inspiring.

Ramatu received a two-year scholarship from the Wegdam Vocational and Technology Institute, run by We Yone Child Foundation, to learn tailoring. Today, she works at a fashion design shop in Freetown and uses her income to support her two siblings and other family members in the village.

Stories like this remind me why I love telling people's stories. A simple opportunity can completely change someone's life.

Thank you to the Wegdam Foundation for supporting women and young people with skills that help them build a better future. Through its partnership with We Yone Child Foundation, more than 400 young people from vulnerable communities have already benefited.

For 16-year-old Kadiatu, this ferry is her only means of survival. She comes to the ferry every day to sell biscuits. Her hope, however, is that “we will have a bridge someday to minimise the risks we face every day.” She added that sometimes the ferry struggles to anchor for over one hour at sea due to rough weather or mechanical problems.

For many people, the ferry is their main source of livelihood. Hundreds travel from Lungi each morning with goods, crossing by ferry to sell at the market. For children, it is their daily means of transport to school. Others depend on it to get to work every day. For some families, it also serves as the main link between Sierra Leone and loved ones returning from abroad.
