On this Day, January 26, 1961.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at Mumbai’s Gateway of India to witness the unveiling of a magnificent equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The statue was installed on the same site where previously stood a statue of King George V.
According to a TOI report, 33 women performed arti puja to the strains of ``tutari’’ (bugles) as thousands of people burst into applause. A choir of 1,500 school children sang paens.
``Here at last stands our great leader, Maharashtra’s leader and India’s leader. The statue is a symbol of India’s honour, pride and self-respect,’’ said Mr Chavan in Marathi.
The statue was the work of sculptor Sadashiv Sathe. A Sum of Rs 1.15 lakh for the entire project was raised from public donations.
Mumbai, mid-1970s.
Marine Drive stretches ahead with Queens Road in view, as a Western Railway local train passes Charni Road. A ‘Laila Majnu’ poster starring Rishi Kapoor looks down on the street, while kaali-peeli taxis glide along neatly marked lanes, framed by concrete footpath railings and a calmer city pace.

Photo of Churchgate railway station taken at the end of the 19th century!
It was opened on this day, in 1870.
See how close the sea was to the station at that time. Then it was not a terminus and tracks are further heading towards Colaba which was a terminus.
The Colaba Station was where the present day Badhwar Park Railways Officer's Colony is in the present day.
