Post Independence era Indian art and artists. We visit museums around the world but not many are familiar with the contemporary and modern Indian artists
Tyeb Mehta, one of the most famous post colonial Indian painters. Here are examples of his “Diagonal” series, the “Mahishasura” series and his most famous triptych painting “Celebration “
Remembering #MahatmaGandhiji today. This famous linocut by #nandalalbose of Bapu on his salt March became emblematic of the freedom struggle, and gave artistic expression to “the soul of a nation ling suppressed “. Bose also created the handwritten copy of the constitution.
Amrita Sher Gil, #amritashergill was an Indian-Hungarian artist who died in 1941, aged just 28. She was known for her beauty and colorful personal life. She was influenced by her travel in South India, an example this painting , “Bride’s toilet’ #indianartists
#Anjolieelamenon Anjolie Ela Menon went to school in the Nilgiris. Born in 1940 she has won many awards including the Padma Shri. One of her series is on the Namboodri Brahmins. I love this particular representation. In art a lot is left to our own interpretation and aesthetics
Everyone can recognize a #rajaraviverma he made idealized portraits of Gods and mythology. He doesn’t belong to the post independence era but included him because he is one of the most well known #indianartists . His subjects r too fair skinned though ( European influence)!
#ganeshpyne life took a turn for the better when he finally married his college sweetheart Meera Dutta after waiting for her for 30 years. Art critics say that after his marriage at age 53 his paintings seemed lighter and happier
#Ganeshpyne has been called the poet of Melancholia for his dark, brooding paintings. Pyne was only 9 yrs when his father died and his family was caught up in the Calcutta riots during partition. He saw carts piled with dead bodies, which wld haunt him for years to come.
Nandalal Bose’s linocut of Mahatma Gandhi on the salt March became an emblem of non violent non co-operation and gave artistic expression to the “soul of a nation, long suppressed “. Along with his team from Santiniketan, he created the hand painted copy of the constitution
He is one the first Indian modernists who moved away from the hyper realistic European styles to a more simplistic form. I like the serenity of his painting “ Sati” where the woman about to immolate herself looks inexplicably calm.
The more I learn about Indian artists I am regretful how little I knew about them. Especially Nandanlal Bose who was an important part of India’s freedom struggle.
Nandalal Bose was born in 1882 in West Bengal, British India.
Jamini Roy (1887- 1972) is one of India’s 9 national treasured artists. He was influenced by folklore and kalighat Pat traditions and experimented heavily with natural dyes. Winner of the Padma Bhushan and Viceroy’s medal. #jaminiroy
#Bhupenkhakhar was born in 1934 and trained in the Baroda School of Art. He has won the Padma Shri and his canvases are displayed in the British Museum and the Tate. He was also an advocate for gay rights. His canvases speak of loneliness and isolation
Arpita Singh (b 1937) is one of the best Indian women artists. Whatever is here” where a blind Dhritarashtra is seated as a central figure, surrounded by an intricate web of human figures and text. “Wish dream” is based on a Tibetan play, which was a version of the Ramayana.
“Speechless city”, a 1974 painting by artist Ghulam Mohamed Sheikh. It depicts a deserted city . Painted to protest the Emergency rule of Indira Gandhi when citizens were denied freedom of speech. It is a haunting portrayal of a society bereft of those rights that make us human
